Humans have been crafting wooden bowls and utensils since the dawn of time.
Today, these simple objects offer a tactile, almost primal experience that connects us to our roots. Unlike many modern materials, wood and ceramics are made from 100% natural elements and remain entirely natural at the end of their journey. Their energy footprint is minimal—or even nonexistent—making them a choice that feels as timeless as the hands that shape them. And yes, they are biodegradable (but we’d prefer you cherish them a little longer).
Each wood bowl, vessel, or form I create is made from 100% storm-damaged or fallen trees found within a mile of my home and shop.
The wood species I work with reflect the hardwood forests of South-Central Indiana—Maples, Oaks, Cherry, Sycamore, Hickory, and Walnut. These trees are the roots of my world.
Though they may seem lifeless, these pieces are still part of a living ecosystem. Wood continues to react to changes in its environment. Over time, you may notice subtle shifts. In very humid or dry conditions, a bowl may slightly oval out or not sit perfectly flat. It may also lose its initial sheen with use, but this is a natural process that can be gently restored with care.
I recommend applying Mahoney’s Walnut Oil, or a similar product, when the piece begins to look a little dull, to maintain its beauty and luster. Never put a wood bowl in the dishwasher. Only hand wash and towel dry, leaving it out to fully dry before storing.
I hope your new piece brings warmth to your home and connects you to the timeless roots of the land.
